Frying delight… here’s how to chip in with savings on a family favourite

FRIES FOR FREE: Fries taste even better when you don’t have to pay for them. Download the McDonald’s app to start earning points from your orders, which build up into freebies.

The first order comes with 1,000 bonus points. For a small portion of fries you need 1,500 points. For medium, it’s 2,500.

At Burger King you can also currently get a special offer of 99p regular fries when ordering through its app.

MAKE YOUR OWN: Opt for Maris Piper potatoes (a 2.5kg pack is £1.49 in Aldi or Tesco) if you fancy having a go at cooking your own chips from scratch.

Chop potatoes to finger sized. To fry at home, you’ll need sunflower oil or maybe try groundnut oil.

You will know the oil is the perfect temperature once a chip starts to float.

Then cook the chips in batches using a metal sieve until they are golden.

If you do not want to fry them, you can also toss raw potatoes in oil and simply roast in the oven for around 45 minutes. Salt and season to finish.

SUPERMARKET SAVIOURS: If you’re not a dab hand in the kitchen, Tesco’s finest chunky chips are £2.60 for a 449g pack or can be bought with a main, dessert and drink as part of a Clubcard £12 dinner for two.

A 1.2kg pack of steak cut chips is down to £1.45 from £1.75 at Morrisons. Or you can get two 700g packs of McCain frozen triple-cooked gastro chips for £5 (usual price £3.49 each) at Morrisons.
