Annual inflation eased modestly in August to 8.3% from a year earlier, largely due to a steep decline in gasoline prices, the Labor Department said. Prices rose in many other categories, including food, last month. Outside of often volatile energy and food prices, inflation accelerated in August—a sign of broadening price pressures. The so-called core consumer-price index increased 6.3% in August from a year earlier, up from the 5.9% advance in both June and July.
