Political differences set aside for day as new monarch seeks to continue bridge-building reputation

Political leaders from across the Northern Ireland political spectrum have gathered outside Hillsborough Castle, the royal mansion in County Down, ahead of meeting King Charles III amid hope he can continue the Queen’s record of aiding reconciliation.

Nationalist leaders are set to play a major role in the events which were being planned amid tight security, with Alex Maskey, the Sinn Féin Speaker of the Northern Ireland assembly, giving a message of condolence on behalf of the assembly in the castle’s throne room.
