This week saw three new watch models unveiled at the special Apple event (along with the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro), including the Apple Watch Series 8.

And here’s how they can help when you’re in dire straits…

Car crash detection

Apple has built a truly brilliant feature into the new watch models called Crash Detection.

The tech giant has created a special algorithm that sucks up data from various sensors – accelerometers, barometers, GPS, microphones and more.

And it can use this data to determine if you’ve been in a severe crash.

So in the extremely unfortunate event that someone is in a severe car crash, the watch will prompt the user to tap to call emergency services – or cancel the pop-up.

If the wearer is unresponsive after a 10-second countdown, the emergency protocol begins.

This will share the device location with emergency services as well as the wearer’s emergency contacts.

The detection works even better if you’ve got an iPhone on you too, because it provides more data.

Waypoint and Backtrack

The new Apple Watch Ultra gets some extra features – and so it should, given it starts at $799/£849.

It’s got a built-in compass app that enables special features called Waypoints and Backtrack.

You can log waypoints with your watch as you hike in the great outdoors.

For instance, you could mark your camp, a recent signpost or fork in the road, or a water source.

You can quickly mark these with the new orange Action Button on the side of the Apple Watch Ultra.

If you get lost at any point, you can use Backtrack (powered by GPS), a special orienteering tool that will help you retrace your steps.

Emergency Siren

Another brilliant feature on the Apple Watch Ultra is the emergency siren.

Apple has built a powerful speaker into the side of the Watch Ultra.

When you activate it, the Ultra will emit a loud 86-decibel siren.

It can be heard from up to 600ft away, according to Apple.

“An 86-decibel siren is designed for emergencies, should users become lost or injured, and can help draw attention to a location,” Apple explained.

“The unique sound signature incorporates two distinct alternating patterns, which can repeat for up to several hours.”

Apple said that the first pattern is a distress warning.

And the second mimics the internationally recognised SOS pattern.

The specific frequency of the noise was chosen to carry over long distances and cut through any ambient din.

It could really help you out if you’re in a tricky spot.

The Apple Watch Ultra is available from Friday, September 23.

And the Apple Watch Series 8 is up for grabs on Friday, September 16.
