LONDON—Lysol maker Reckitt Benckiser Group PLC said its chief executive is stepping down in a surprise move that sent shares of the consumer-goods giant lower.

Laxman Narasimhan is departing at the end of the month after leading Reckitt, which also sells Enfamil formula and Durex condoms, for three years. He will be replaced on an interim basis by senior independent director and longtime tobacco-industry executive Nicandro Durante.
