It comes as motorists are seeing fuel costs soar – it now costs around £100 to fill up the average family car.

Soaring petrol prices have seen prices reach 178.9p a litre, according to the RAC, and 189.3p a litre for diesel.

Fuel prices have eased off slightly in recently days, but they’re still considerably higher than a year ago.

Last week, supermarkets were blasted for not passing on wholesale price falls to customers quickly enough.

Drivers warned over petrol prices at supermarkets including Tesco and Asda

A price war ensued, with Asda slashing fuel prices by 5p a litre, Morrisons by 6p and Sainsbury’s by 5p.

Independent forecourts have cut prices even further, with one petrol station claiming to be the UK’s cheapest.

And drivers also spotted fuel for less than 160p a litre at Costco.

How to get £5 off fuel

Motorists looking to save a fiver have until August 17 to take advantage of this latest deal.

It is only available to new members at Topcashback, so you won’t be able to claim the deal with an existing account.

To sign up, you just need to enter your email address and create a password – you must sign up through this deal page to be eligible.

To get the money off, you’ll need to go and spend £10 or more on unleaded or super unleaded petrol or diesel at a participating petrol station.

Here is the full list of petrol stations the deal is available at:

  • Tesco
  • Morrisons
  • Sainsbury’s
  • Asda
  • Co-operative
  • Esso
  • BP
  • Texaco
  • Gulf
  • Total
  • Jet
  • Murco
  • Shell

Keep your receipt – that’s the important bit. You’ll need to take a picture of the receipt which clearly shows the date, the name of the fuel station, the receipt number, and the name of the item you’ve purchased.

Next, login to TopCashback and upload a photo of your receipt.

Only receipts from August 8 will be eligible for the deal, and you’ll need to upload the picture before midnight on August 17, 2022.

You can’t get the deal through the app either – you’ll need to do it through the desktop or mobile site.

You can also only redeem the offer once – and the deal could be withdrawn early if the limit is reached, so it’s better to take advantage sooner than later.

Once approved, the cash should arrive in your TopCashback account within 14 days, where you can choose to have it paid out.

How else can I cut the cost of petrol?

Checking petrol prices is the easiest way to cut your fuel costs – sites such as petrolprices.com let you search by postcode to find the cheapest in your area.

Checking local social media groups is one way to track down bargain fuel prices too, according to Luke Bosdet, an expert at The AA.

Loyalty schemes could save you cash – some could shave up to 5p a litre off the cost.

Drivers with a BPme rewards card get one point for every £1 they spend in store or on a litre of regular fuel at a BP garage.

You’ll get two points for every litre of the more expensive Ultimate fuel – and get £1 off fuel for every 200 points.

Texaco members can save 1p per litre of fuel with its Star Rewards scheme.

And you can sign up to Shell Go to get money off at its forecourts.

Changing your driving style can help make your fuel go further too.

Braking and accelerating sharply will use more fuel, as will speeding and blasting the air-con.

Check your tyres are at the correct pressure and don’t be suckered into buying the premium fuel at the forecourt – most cars don’t need it.
