In charge: Next boss Lord Wolfson

The taxman has launched a probe into Next after the clothing giant bungled the introduction of a payroll system.

HM Revenue & Customs is investigating whether the firm is paying its staff the minimum wage after thousands of low-paid workers were underpaid, The Sunday Times reported.

It comes after the botched implementation of a new Oracle payments system led to some minimum-wage workers being underpaid last year, while others were overpaid.

Next said the rate of errors had fallen, though 219 people were still underpaid in its last weekly payroll.

The business, led by Lord Wolfson, said they would be given their full wages within five days.
