Delta Air Lines Inc. on Wednesday said strong demand for travel that offset higher costs helped the airline turn a profit in the second quarter.

Delta’s operations were marked by stumbles in recent months, however, as the airline expanded too rapidly in an effort to take advantage of the influx of passengers, Delta Chief Executive Ed Bastian said.
