New Oriental Education & Technology Group one of China’s largest private-tutoring companies until a regulatory crackdown almost crushed it last year, has become the country’s latest live-streaming sensation.

Its online English classes are gone. Instead, former tutors have gained online fame in recent weeks by selling fresh produce, fish and mutton on ByteDance Ltd.’s popular short-video platform Douyin.
