Investigators trying to establish how gunman was able to kill officer inside police station

Investigators are trying to establish how a police officer was shot dead inside a police station by a suspect who is understood to have been known to the government’s anti-extremism programme.

The long-serving sergeant, who was said to be close to retirement, was killed after the gunman opened fire at Croydon custody centre in south London in the early hours of Friday.
