Labour leader will stay in post after pledging to resign if fined for having a beer and takeaway curry with staff

Keir Starmer and his deputy Angela Rayner have been cleared by Durham police of breaching lockdown rules over a beer and takeaway curry they had with staff during election campaigning last year.

The decision means both, who always said no rules were broken, will stay in post. Starmer had placed his future in the hands of the police force by pledging to resign if he was issued with a fixed-penalty notice over an incident that became known as Beergate.
