And she has stayed put during two world wars, four kings and queens and 25 prime ministers.

Widowed Elsie, who has two children, six grandkids and 29 great-grandkids, said: “I’ve never wanted to live anywhere else — this is my home and it means everything to me.

“I could make my way round it in the dark.”

Her coal miner dad first rented the house on Barker Street in Huthwaite, Notts, for seven shillings and sixpence in 1902.

Elsie — the youngest of five children — was born in a bedroom on June 28, 1918, during World War One.

She was 14 when her mum died from pneumonia.

She went on to marry husband Bill in 1941, during World War Two.

Elsie recalled: “My mum, Eliza, died so I stayed to look after my dad.

“When me and Bill married, we just stopped here and never left.

“My dad died in 1949 and we finally bought the house in the 1960s.”

The landlord offered the home — now worth £75,000 — for £250.

Elsie said: “We didn’t have £250, so I went to the council and asked for a loan. They agreed and the house was ours.”

The first thing they did was have a bathroom put in to replace a tin bath.

Elsie said: “We kept the outside loo — it still works. Very little has changed.

“I wouldn’t have been happy anywhere else.”

Son Ray was born in the house and moved back in before his dad died aged 79 in 1996.

Ray, 75, said: “She’ll never ever leave this house. She loves it — it’s full of memories.

Elsie’s daughter-in-law, Pat Allcock, 79, added: “The house is the focal point for the entire family.”
