Legendary poet Surender was born into a Brahmin family in Haryana, hailing from a village Nanal Choudhary of Mahendragarh district, Haryana. He is a degree holder in Commerce from Shri Ram College of Commerce of Delhi University.
In 1966, Sharma started poetry when he was in college, reported in an interview with Mid-Day. Later, he professionally started poetry in the 1970s.
