What is the Snapchat delete after 24 hours setting?

On June 23, 2022, users flooded social media confused as to why their chat settings on Snapchat were automatically set to delete after 24 hours.

Typically, a chat gets deleted after its opened and viewed by both users and is designed to erase all unopened chats after 30 days.

Users can also save certain chats by long-pressing them. Saved chats will show up with a grey background.

The ‘Delete After 24 Hours’ rule, however, allows users to save chats for 24 hours before they are erased.

How can you change the setting?

The ‘Delete After 24 Hours’ option is tailor-made for people that need to save their chats for a while in order to remember what they discussed.

However, if you are the type of person that likes to keep their chats disappearing then you must follow these instructions:

  • Select a chat from your list by pressing and holding onto it until setting options appear
  • Select ‘Chat Settings’ followed by ‘Delete Chats’
  • Select from either of the following two options: After Viewing and 24 Hours after Viewing
  • The first option is the generic disappearing setting, while the second option retains chats for 24 hours
