BEST DEALS: Use a comparison site such as sellmymobile.com to find out how much you could get for your make and model from different firms.

Check if big companies such as Mazuma Mobile are included in the results and, if not, check their websites as well. You may get more by replacing a worn battery or fixing a cracked screen.

CUT OUT THE MIDDLE MAN: Often your phone will be resold after you’ve sent it off. Doing the resell yourself could boost your profits — though it isn’t without its risks. Research what price it might fetch and search on eBay for a guide to selling mobile phones. Never send it off to a stranger without tracking it.

REMOVE ALL TRACES: However you pass on your phone, make sure you erase all traces of you first. Remove any security codes and reset it to factory settings. If you can’t sell it or give it away, be eco aware by recycling it.

SAVE BY STICKING: Most of us automatically upgrade our phones when our contract is up. But if your mobile is working fine, you could save a packet each month just by sticking with your existing model and switching to a Sim-only deal. Do your legwork to find out if the savings could outweigh the money you’d get for selling it on.

GIVE IT AWAY: If your phone isn’t worth much, or you can’t face the hassle of trading it in, there are charities that will take your phone off your hands. FoneBank is a trade-in site that also lets you donate part, or all, of the proceeds to WaterAid, Oxfam or the National Trust.
