Vince McMahon stepped back from his role as chief executive officer and chairman of World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. as its board investigates alleged misconduct, the company said Friday.

The move follows an article this week by The Wall Street Journal reporting that the WWE board was investigating a secret $3 million settlement that the longtime CEO agreed to pay to a departing employee with whom he allegedly had an affair, according to documents and people familiar with the board inquiry.
