Elon Musk didn’t eliminate the possibility of layoffs at Twitter Inc. and said he wants to dramatically increase the platform’s user base in a wide-ranging discussion with the staff at the social-media company that he has agreed to buy for $44 billion.

At the virtual meeting, which lasted for about 45 minutes, Mr. Musk also said he was open to remote work under certain circumstances, outlined his thoughts on free speech and discussed the possibility of alien life, according to Twitter employees who participated.
