Several top auto-industry executives are urging lawmakers to lift a cap on the number of electric vehicles a car company can sell before their models are no longer eligible for a $7,500 tax credit.

In a joint letter sent Monday to House and Senate leaders, the chief executives of four auto makers—Ford Motor Co., General Motors Stellantis NV and Toyota Motor North America—said the $7,500 tax credit for EV buyers has helped accelerate adoption of battery-powered vehicles and spurred consumer interest.
