Rise of nearly 6p a litre at UK forecourts over half-term holiday renews concern over spiralling costs

Petrol prices soared by nearly 6p a litre at UK forecourts over the half-term school holiday to a fresh record, with drivers warned they could exceed 180p this week.

The RAC called for radical government intervention after figures from the data firm Experian Catalist showed the average cost of a litre of petrol reached a record 177.9p on Sunday, up from 172.1p on 27 May.
