As soaring inflation, rising food prices, and the energy crisis continues to clobber households, discounts are more important than ever.

What is the Blue Light Card?

The Blue Light Card helps certain emergency workers receive money off at lots of participating retailers.

In 2021, Blue Light Card says it helped its members save over £100million over the course of the year, and it predicts even bigger savings this year.

You can grab discounts on things like clothes, holidays, cars, days out, gifts, insurance, and phones.

You can choose a digital card which is free, though you can’t use it in stores, or a physical card which costs £4.99, can be used in stores, and lasts for two years – or you can have both.

Blue Light Card has an app which is free for members to download via the Google Play or App store.

It has an interactive map feature to help you find local discounts closest to your chosen location.

You can also keep tabs on how much you’ve saved with the card by using the app, which could come in handy when budgeting.

Small and large companies across the UK pay thanks to key workers by offering members discounts if they have the Blue Light Card.

The money saving card has been running since 2008 and has partnered up with thousands of brands along the way, including Apple and Alton Towers.

Who is eligible to get the Blue Light Card?

Only those in certain emergency service or key worker roles can apply for a Blue Light Card.

A full list of those who are eligible include anyone in the following roles:

  • Ambulance service
  • Blood bikes
  • Fire service
  • Highways traffic officers
  • HM armed forces
  • HM armed forces veteran
  • HM coastguard
  • HM prison and probation service
  • Home Office (Borders and Immigration)
  • Independent lifeboats
  • MoD civil servant
  • MoD fire service
  • MoD police
  • NHS
  • NHS Dental Practice
  • Pharmacy
  • Police
  • Red cross
  • Reserved army forces
  • RNLI
  • Search and rescue
  • Social care
  • St Andrews ambulance
  • St John ambulance

You will need to prove your profession by uploading a form of valid ID or a recent payslip to be eligible.

To sign up, visit the Blue Light Card website. and fill out an online form.

Note that you’ll be asked a couple of questions, for example, about your job title and branch.

Where can you use the Blue Light Card?

The retailers that participate in the Blue Light Card scheme can change regularly, meaning there isn’t a comprehensive list of stores you can use it at.

So it’s worth checking whether the discount is valid on the store website if you’re shopping online, or asking a member of staff when at the till in store – the worst they can say is no.
