And maybe you want to pounce out of the blue, rather than giving the receiver warning that a long message is coming.

Whatever the reason, there is a simple little trick that allows you to essentially switch off typing on WhatsApp.

It’s not an official switch in the app as such, but a clever workaround all the same.

All you need to do is set yourself to flight mode – or airplane mode as Apple calls it on the iPhone.

Flight mode blocks off all connections.

So, switch flight mode on and go into WhatsApp.

A message may appear asking you to turn off flight mode – just tap OK to dismiss this.

Type out your message without anyone knowing and hit send.

Then, just switch flight mode off.

Once your data and/or WiFi has re-established a connection, the WhatsApp message will go through.

You might have to open WhatsApp to force the app to push it through.

But once it’s done, the message will send out and no-one will have known it was coming.
