OTTAWA—Canada will ban equipment made by China’s Huawei Technologies Co. and ZTE from being used in the country’s next-generation 5G mobile network, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The decision follows a yearslong security review disrupted by geopolitical tension between Ottawa and Beijing focused on the detention of Huawei finance chief Meng Wanzhou. Government officials will formally issue its decision this afternoon at a press conference.
