Abbott Laboratories will distribute supplies of certain nutritional formulas designed for people with rare metabolic diseases made at a Michigan manufacturing plant that is the subject of an investigation by the Food and Drug Administration into possible bacterial contamination.

Abbott said Friday it is releasing the formula for free to patients on a case-by-case basis at the request of the FDA to ease shortages.
