RICE could get cheaper under a mega trade deal with India that Boris Johnson hopes to sign “by Diwali” in October.

The curry-complementing carb is one of several goods from India the PM wants to ditch costly tariffs from.

Clothes made in the emerging South Asian powerhouse could also get less expensive under an agreement

Speaking alongside Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in New Delhi, BoJo said tearing down trade barriers would be a win-win for both countries.

Hailing the benefits of Brexit the PM said: “We are making full use of the freedom that we now have to reach a Free Trade Agreement.

“A deal where you can lift those tariffs, you can, India, Narendra, on our machinery and apples.

“And we in turn, we can lift the tariffs on your rice and textiles.”

Binning off import duties would allow shops in Britain to knock some price off packets of rice for consumers.

Mr Johnson saluted India as a close friend and stiffened his commitment to their alliance.

He said during his two-day trip he was made to feel like a famous cricketer or film star.

He said: “I had an amazing reception – absolutely amazing– I felt like Sachin Tendulkar – my face was about as ubiquitous everywhere as Amitabh Bachchan.”

But the trip itself was not without controversy – after the PM was criticised for visiting a JCB factory in Gujarat, while their bulldozers are being used by the Indian authorities to tear down Muslim-owned properties in a sectarian dispute.

The PM said: “We always raise the difficult issues, of course we do, but the fact is that India is a country of 1.35 billion people and it is democratic, it’s the world’s largest democracy.”

He was speaking after posing for pictures in a JCB bulldozer after being shown around the new plant by owner Lord Bamford, who is a major Tory donor.
