Barclays will soon charge to replace debit cards if more than one is lost or damaged in a year.

It is the first High Street bank to introduce such a fee.

From August, the first replacement card will be free but any more will cost customers £5 if they misplace one or need to update their details — if you change your name, for example.

Barclays will send cards by second- class post without charge, to arrive within five working days; first-class delivery will be £1.99.

Those who need an urgent replacement can pay £12 for a temporary card printed at 150 selected branches. It will be valid for 28 days.

HSBC, Santander, Lloyds, Nationwide, NatWest and others do not charge for replacement bank cards. Mobile bank Monzo offers two free replacement cards and charges £5 thereafter.

Barclays refuses to say how much cash it will save by the move, but says it ‘will not charge if a customer is a victim of fraud or theft’.

The charge will not apply to children with a BarclayPlus or Young Person’s account, or to those with the bank’s basic current account.
