More gig-driving companies are laying out plans to address surging fuel prices, with Lyft Inc. LYFT 5.93% announcing a fuel surcharge and DoorDash Inc. DASH 13.45% offering a fuel rebate.
Lyft said Wednesday that riders will pay a fixed 55-cent fuel surcharge on every trip, which would go to drivers. Rival Uber Technologies Inc. UBER 9.43% said Friday that U.S. riders will pay a fuel surcharge of 45 cents to 55 cents, depending on their location. The charge for Uber’s food-delivery customers ranges from 35 cents to 45 cents.
Uber and Lyft said the surcharge will remain in effect for the next two months.
On Tuesday, food-delivery company DoorDash said its couriers would receive cash back on fuel through a prepaid debit card the company has with Visa Inc. V 2.78% Grubhub raised the per mile pay for couriers last week, saying the increase was in line with the average per-mile cost increase for gas in drivers’ regions.
As of February, retail gas prices in the U.S. were up 38% year-over-year, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The average price a gallon of regular gas in the U.S. reached a record high last week.
