BRITAIN will impose a total ban on Russian oil to strike a devastating blow to Putin’s economy and “cripple his war machine”.

Boris Johnson today announced plans to phase out all oil supplies by the end of the year in response to the brutal invasion of Ukraine.

It is another attempt to strangle the tyrant’s economy by slashing the UK’s dependence on Moscow’s most valuable export.

The PM said: “In another economic blow to the Putin regime following their illegal invasion of Ukraine, the UK will move away from dependence on Russian oil throughout this year, building on our severe package of international economic sanctions.”

In a coordinated Western effort to sting Putin, President Joe Biden is also confirming the United States will be weaning off Kremlin-produced oil.

While the UK will ratchet up its own drilling, the oil ban will likely clobber Brits at the petrol pumps with higher prices.

Average petrol prices have already exceeded 155p per litre for the first time ever.

It is likely Mr Johnson will make further announcements on turning off the Russian gas pipe soon.

Mr Kwarteng hinted: “Finally, while the UK is not dependent on Russian natural gas – 4 per cent of our supply – I am exploring options to end this altogether.”

Yesterday the PM said there was “no doubt” Brits would be left short-changed by the decision to shun Russian energy – but it was the right thing to do.

He told a press conference: “We must do everything we can to protect consumers and the public.

“There are going to be impacts let’s be in no doubt, there are going to be impacts.

“But I think that it’s the right thing to do, to move away from Russian hydrocarbons.”

Oil giant Shell today announced it will no longer buy Russian oil and gas and is shutting all its petrol stations in the country.
