It’s the go-to social media app for millions of people around the world, but it appears that Twitter is experiencing issues this afternoon.

According to Down Detector, the problems started at around 15:13 GMT, and are affecting users worldwide.

MailOnline did not experience any issues with the desktop version, but was unable to view any replies to tweets on the iOS app.

An error message simply reads: ‘Uh oh, an error was encountered. Try again.’

While Twitter is yet to comment on the issue, thousands of problems have been reported on DownDetector.

Of those who reported issues in the UK, 77 per cent said they were having problems with the app, 19 per cent with the website, and five per cent were struggling with comments.

Over on Twitter itself, many users have tweeted to discuss the issue.

One user wrote: ‘Hello? Is twitter down? Why are the replies not loading.’

Another added: ‘Can anyone else see replies on twitter? For me it just keeps saying that an error occurred for every single post and I can’t scroll down to read the comments lol.’

And one joked: ‘Is twitter down or am I in trouble again?’

This isn’t the first time that Twitter has experienced issues in recent weeks.

On February 17, the app crashed for over an hour, leaving users unable to load tweets of view profiles.

WHO HAS TWITTER BANNED IN THE PAST?

Twitter announced in November 2017 it would begin banning accounts affiliated with ‘hate groups’.

In March, former English Defence League leader Tommy Robinson was banned for violating hate speech rules

The news followed years of criticism from users that the site allowed neo-nazi, white supremacist and other extremist groups to spread abusive messages.

Twitter suspended the accounts of several leaders of the far-right group Britain First in December 2017 for breaking its rules on hate speech.

In March 2018, former English Defence League leader Tommy Robinson was banned for violating rules governing ‘hateful conduct’.

The site announced it would soon undertake stronger measures to crack down on online trolls in May.

Despite sweeping bans, the site has come under criticism for not doing enough to purge itself of abusive users.

In July 2018, actor Seth Rogan lashed out at Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey for continuing to verify the accounts of white supremacists.

He tweeted: ‘I’ve been DMing with @Jack about his bizarre need to verify white supremacists on his platform for the last 8 months or so, and after all the exchanges, I’ve reached a conclusion: the dude simply does not seem to give a f**k.’
