EU accuses UK of lagging behind as Whitehall source says it is ‘weeks behind where it should be’

Ministers are understood to be examining ways of speeding up the sanctions process, amid fears that targeting the government’s full hitlist of more than 100 Russian oligarchs could take as long as six months, because of legal hurdles.

The government has come under intense pressure in recent days over the pace at which it is taking action against individuals with links to the Kremlin, despite the prime minister’s pledge last week to “squeeze Russia from the global economy, piece by piece”.
