POUNDLAND is planning a major change to the way people shop at the discount store.

The retailer’s fans across the UK will be able to order online for the first time after the discounter snapped up a digital rival.

Poundland will extend its offering to include clothing and homeware.

The bargain retailer has bought Poundshop.com as part of its plans to ramp up its online shopping plans.

Poundland said the deal means customers will be able to shop online in the “near future”.

However, it hasn’t confirmed when the digital store will be opening.

The budget chain has been trialling a e-commerce option in the Midlands and South Yorkshire.

It said following the Poundshop.com deal, it will be able to extend its offering to include clothing and homeware.

It will also be able to expand beyond the UK to offer a home delivery service in the Republic of Ireland.

Poundshop.com was founded in 2014 and has around 400,000 customers and 65 distribution centre staff.

The deal includes Poundshop.com’s intellectual property, online platform, warehouse and customer database.

All Poundland.com’s workers are being kept on and customer orders are being processed as normal.

Barry Williams, Poundland managing director, said: “This acquisition puts power and pace behind our aspirations to make our amazing products and value available to customers across the UK and Ireland, however they choose to shop.”

The discount retailer recently opened its biggest UK store, with more clothing and fresh food options.

Last year it also trialled a new convenience store format with two smaller shops.

A Poundland shopper has shared how they get all the best discounts and bargains.
