The 2022 Super Bowl halftime show, which featured a handful of hip-hop legends, was a love letter to Los Angeles. And millennials were here for it.

The show, which featured performances from hip-hop legends Eminem, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige and a surprise appearance by 50 Cent, tapped into nostalgia and Los Angeles pride.

Some online, including LeBron James, hailed it as the best halftime show in NFL history.

50 Cent’s surprise appearance

50 Cent performed “In Da Club,” surprising fans with his feature. He opened his set upside down, a call-back to the song’s music video that was released in 2003.

Eminem took a knee and Dr. Dre mentioned the police

Eminem knelt while rapping “Lose Yourself,” referring to the NFL’s treatment of Colin Kaepernick. Some fans believed that it was a dig against the NFL, which penalized Kaepernick for kneeling during the national anthem in protest of police brutality.

Anderson Paak played drums during the set.

While performing “Still D.R.E.,” Dr. Dre recited the lyric “Still not loving police.”

An homage to LA

The set was a recreation of Tam’s Burgers, a Los Angeles restaurant locals describe as a “South Central LA staple.” The performance included nods to Los Angeles culture, and the stage floor was a birds-eye view of the city’s streets.

Many viewers on social media described it as the greatest halftime show in the history of NFL.

Though some joked that the pride took a turn when the game resumed and the Bengals immediately scored a touchdown.
