Often the stolen data is dumped on the dark web for cyber criminals to feast on.

So what can you do to make sure you haven’t fallen victim? And what should you do if you have?

Check if your account was part of any breaches

There is a website that cross checks your email address against known data breaches and tells you if it’s been compromised.

The site is called haveibeenpwned.com.

If any come up, it’ll tell you which sites.

And you should immediately consider changing passwords for them.

Check bank cards

In the rare instance that full payment card data was involved in any breach, check if they are still active.

If they are, you might want to ask your bank for a replacement.

Check other passwords

The next thing to think about is whether you have reused any affected passwords on other accounts.

This is quite a common mistake.

If a cyber crook gets hold of the comprised data on the dark web, they can take a chance on other popular websites to see whether you’re using the same login details.

This is why it’s always important to have different passwords for every service you use.

Most people find remembering all these passwords quite tricky of course, in which case you might want to look into getting a password manager.
