Anna Firth secures 86% of the vote to take over from the late Sir David Amess after ballot where other mainstream parties stood aside

The Conservatives have held on to the seat of Southend West after a byelection triggered by the killing of Sir David Amess.

The Tory candidate, Anna Firth, ran out as a comfortable winner with 86% of the vote. Labour, the Liberal Democrats and other mainstream political parties chose not to contest the seat.
