CHEEKY Nando’s has secretly hiked prices by up to 8%.

The restaurant chain has added 55p to the price of its whole chicken dish after suffering “the most challenging year” in its history.

At Nando’s, the price of a houmous with peri peri drizzle has gone up from £3.95 to £4.25, while 10 chicken wings with two sides have gone up to £15.45 from £14.95.

The latest prices are a new blow to customers already facing a massive squeeze in living costs.

Sarah Coles, of investment firm Hargreaves Lansdown, said: “It’s unlikely to deter diehard Nando’s fans, who stayed loyal even when they ran out of chicken.

“But it’s yet another rise in costs for families being put under pressure from all sides. We’re already having to sacrifice an awful lot of the nice-to-haves to make ends meet.

“A cheeky Nando’s may have escaped the cut for some because it’s been a relatively affordable treat.

“Unfortunately, these price hikes may well make people think twice about whether they have to let go of this too.”

She added restaurants have had a torrid time during the pandemic, managing lockdowns, a collapse in the number of people eating out and safety precautions that mean fewer people can be allowed through the door.

Other chains have also put up prices, with Côte Brasserie last year adding £1 to many dishes.

Pubs are also expected to hike the price of pint by as much as 50p this year.

Nando’s suffered a £241.8million pre-tax loss in the latest financial year to February 2021, following a £99.4million loss the previous year.

Revenues fell by 39.3% to £665million as branches were forced to close during the pandemic.

It suffered further in August when chicken shortages forced 50 restaurants to shut

A spokesman told The Sun: “There are several factors outside of our control, including the continued rise in the cost of ingredients and the difficult trading environment caused by Covid 19, that has impacted our decision to slightly increase our pricing.”

Inflation jumped to 5.4% in December – its highest level in almost 30 years – driven by the higher cost of clothes, food and footwear.
