What is Smart Lock

Android’s Smart Lock feature was launched by Google in 2015.

The technology behind Smart Lock lets Android users choose the instances when it’s okay for the phone to circumvent the PIN or other security features in place to access their phone automatically.

Smart Lock options

There are a number of different Smart Lock options available to Android users.

The ‘On-body Detection’ option keeps your device unlocked when you’re carrying the device on your person.

The ‘Trusted Places’ option keeps your device unlocked when you’re in a trusted location, such as your home.

The ‘Trusted Devices’ option keeps your device unlocked when a trusted Bluetooth device is connected, such as your car stereo.

The ‘Trusted Face’ option lets your device unlock automatically when it recognizes your face.

Lastly, the ‘Voice Match’ option allows you to access and interact with Google Assistant even if your screen is locked by identifying your voice.

How to enable Smart Lock

Before you can enable Smart Lock, you have to make sure you have an active internet connection (preferably WiFi).

Next, make sure that all your apps are updated — you can do this via the Google Play store.

Last, you’re going to want to have a pattern, PIN, or password in place for your device.

Once you’ve completed those steps you can enable Smart Lock.

Go to Settings > Lock screen & security > Advanced > Trust agents.

Drag the slider beside Smart Lock (Google) to the right, then tap the back arrow next to Trust agents.

Find and tap Smart Lock, enter your pattern, PIN or password, and then select a Smart Lock type.

From there, you have to follow the on-screen instructions to enable it.
