MOST businesses close down over Christmas but some petrol stations will be open to make sure Brits can visit friends and family over the festive season.

The roads could be quieter than usual as many people are being cautious over meeting up due to Covid, but there will still be somewhere to fill up on your journey.

The government ramped up Covid restrictions earlier this month, making it compulsory to wear a mask in enclosed spaces.

But there have been no curbs on how many people you can meet at Christmas or how far you can travel.

If you’ll be on the go this Christmas, it is a good idea to get clued up on where you can get fuel.

Are motorway service stations open on Boxing Day?

All motorway service stations must remain open for fuel, parking and toilets 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

It is part of their licence to never close to give drivers a break on their journeys.

You’ll be able to refuel on Boxing Day, but opening times for some facilities inside the main services buildings might vary so it’s best to check ahead.

Are petrol stations on smaller roads open on Boxing Day?

The same rules don’t apply to A-road service and petrol stations, so they do not have to open on Boxing Day or Christmas Day.

Some large petrol stations may choose to open anyway, but other stations might not.

It’s best to check ahead with petrol stations on your route to see if they’ll be open over the festive period.

For example, you can check here to see which Asda pumps are near you.

Companies will often have station locators that you can use to find out opening and closing times. Esso have one, for example, as well as Shell.

If you’re travelling, make sure to check your car over to avoid a breakdown on the way.

It’s best to read up on the rules about driving the day after drinking, because you might not realise it’s not safe to be on the road.
