BEWARE fake Omicron emails landing in inboxes in the coming days.
Cyber-experts are warning Brits over dangerous scams that use Omicron to raid your bank.
These fake emails offer Omicron tests or booster appointments – but are totally fake.
You could receive these dangerous missives by email or text, and should be totally ignored.
Cyber-experts say it’s important to only click coronavirus emails or texts if they come from the NHS or your local doctor surgery.
“For cybercriminals, uncertainty is opportunity,” said Tony Pepper, CEO of cybersecurity firm Egress.
“Cybercriminals are already taking advantage of the uncertainty surrounding the Omicron variant to carry out a new wave of phishing attacks.
“With reports already circulating of scam emails that offer Covid passports, ‘Omicron PCR tests’ and links to register for booster appointments, we’d urge everyone to be extremely cautious about suspicious emails and texts.”
Scam emails and texts are often very sophisticated, and can look like official messages.
You need to be diligent and examine exactly where the message is from – and what it wants.
Check the email address or phone number, and see who is sending the message.
You can also contact your local NHS provider to verify that a message is real.
If any supposed Omicron-related message is asking for financial information, you should always ignore it.
“As the NHS steps up the mass rollout of booster jabs, we anticipate another wave of scam text messages and emails masquerading as vaccine invitations,” cyber-expert Tony explained.
“Now that the announcement has been made, we’d urge everyone to be cautious when it comes to unexpected texts and emails.
“Legitimate NHS text messages will never request your personal financial information, such as credit card details, to book your appointment or a test.
“It’s also important to check any links included in the message for misspellings, numbers used instead of letters, or additional punctuation to help avoid phishing websites.”
Omicron latest
Health Secretary Sajid Javid told MPs yesterday: “The UK Health Security Agency estimates that the current rate of, the current number of daily infections are around 200,000.
“While Omicron represents over 20 per cent of cases in England, we’ve already seen it rise to over 44 per cent in London and we expect it to become the dominant Covid 19 variant in the capital in the next 48 hours.”
It comes as the first UK death from the Omicron variant was confirmed by Boris Johnson yesterday morning.
The UKHSA revealed ten patients were in English hospitals with the mutated strain – between 18-85 years old, most having had two jabs.
Brits have been urged to get their boosters to fight the wave of variant cases.

In new data from Sage, the group that advises the Government, it is estimated two Covid jabs should slash the risk of dying from Omicron by up to 84 per cent.
But the models also showed the chance of simply catching the virus and falling ill is twice reduced if you have a booster too.
The latest data revealed boosters offer up to 75 per cent protection from mild infection from Omicron.
The Sun’s Jab’s Army has urged Brits to come forward and have their life-saving Covid shot, with volunteers also needed to drive the rollout.
