In the years after the 1913 flood in Dayton, Ohio, many wealthy residents made their way to nearby Oakwood, where builders advertised lots as occupying higher ground than those in Dayton. This house is about half a mile from Hawthorn Hill, the former home of the inventor Orville Wright, and from the University of Dayton, a private Catholic school with around 12,000 students.

Cincinnati is about an hour away; the drive to Columbus takes about an hour and 15 minutes.

Size: 5,382 square feet

Price per square foot: $154

Indoors: From the street, a long, paved path cuts through a manicured lawn, leading to a covered porch and a door that opens into the foyer.

To the right is a living room with large, arched windows facing the back and front yards, as well as a fireplace flanked by doorways to a windowed sunroom that has a fountain framed by original tile.

To the left of the foyer is a dining room with a crystal chandelier and French doors that open to a breakfast room with original built-in cabinets. Both spaces have access to a kitchen that has stainless-steel appliances — including a double oven — and space for a table and chairs next to a door to the backyard.

The grand staircase in the foyer winds up to a sunny second-floor landing, brightened by another large, arched window. Just off the landing is the primary suite, which includes a carpeted bedroom with exposed ceiling beams; a carpeted sunroom that could be used as a home office or library; and a bathroom with a deep soaking tub and a separate shower.

A hallway extending from the landing leads to a guest wing with three bedrooms, each large enough to hold a queen-size bed. They share a bathroom off the hallway that has a jetted bathtub.

The third floor could be used as one large guest suite. The full bathroom on this level has a claw-foot tub.

The house has two powder rooms: one off the foyer and the other in the finished basement, which includes a carpeted den and a laundry room.

Outdoor space: There is a tiled patio off the sunroom. The lawn behind the house stretches to the mature trees along the property line. The attached garage holds two cars, and the paved driveway is new.

Taxes: $17,844 (estimated)

For many years, this farmhouse was the home of the impressionist painter Guy C. Wiggins, a member of the Old Lyme art colony whose work, often inspired by local landscapes, is at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Brooklyn Museum. The surrounding area is quiet, with a few country markets selling locally grown produce within a 10-minute drive. The beaches along Long Island Sound, including Rocky Neck State Park Bathing Beach and Giants Neck Beach, are about 25 minutes away by car.

Hartford and New Haven are about a 45-minute drive. New York City is two and a half hours away in light traffic.

Size: 3,112 square feet

Price per square foot: $265

Indoors: This property includes three structures: the main house, a guesthouse and Mr. Wiggins’s former studio.

The front door to the main house opens into the kitchen, which has wide-plank hardwood floors, stainless-steel appliances and a wood-paneled breakfast area. A hallway off the kitchen that’s lined with closets leads to a full bathroom with a glass-walled shower and, beyond, to a family room with low, beamed ceilings and a large stone fireplace.

Off this space are two rooms, roughly equal in size: a dining room with built-in corner cabinets and a parlor with a wood-paneled wall painted a deep blue.

A staircase leads from the first-floor hallway to the second floor, where there are four bedrooms. The primary bedroom, at the back of the house, has a deep walk-in closet. Next door is a bathroom with a claw-foot tub. Across the hall is a guest room with a fireplace, currently used as a den. Two more guest rooms are on this floor; they share a bathroom with a combined tub and shower.

The guesthouse has a sunny, open living area with a kitchen. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms and a full bathroom.

The former studio building has high ceilings, a kitchen and a full bathroom.

Outdoor space: The swimming pool, visible from all three buildings, has a concrete deck surrounded by a tall safety fence.

Taxes: $8,229 (estimated)

This house is on a quiet, tree-lined street in the eastern part of the city, a few blocks from Gallaudet University, a school for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. The National Arboretum, which has an expansive collection of plants and trees, including a bonsai garden, is also nearby. The bustling H Street Corridor neighborhood, filled with restaurants, bars and shops, is about a mile away.

Commuting to Capitol Hill by public transportation takes about half an hour; by car, the trip takes about 15 minutes.

Beyond is space for a dining table that faces the kitchen, which has new appliances, a new backsplash and a large center island with a stone counter. A powder room is off this part of the house, as is a door to the rear deck.

Stairs at the center of the house lead to the upper and lower levels.

Three bedrooms are on the second floor. They share a bathroom with a combined tub and shower.

The finished basement downstairs, which has access to the back patio, includes a laundry room, workout area and full bathroom.

Outdoor space: The wood deck off the kitchen is new, as is the fence that surrounds it. The deck steps down to a partially shaded patio.
